Why not interleave box flaps?

I understand that I should fold over the end flaps on a box and then tape as opposed to interleaving the flaps and taping.

Why is one better than the other?

Because when you fold over the end flaps on a box, and then tape, the structural integrity of the box is greater than if one interleaves the flaps and then tapes. As a result, the assembled box is better able to withstand external forces (such as stacking one box on top of another).
